Theresa Hernandez is a Nurse Practitioner who joined Asthma and Allergy Center in 2012. She graduated from nursing school at the University of Chicago in 2002. Theresa continued her education graduating with her Masters of Science in Nursing, as a Nurse Practitioner, in 2006 while she still was still working at the pediatric ICU at the Rush University Medical Center. Theresa’s previous Nurse Practitioner experience was teaching community health clinical and didactic classes at Rush for undergraduate nursing students and opening urgent care centers that are found in many Walgreens across Illinois now.
Theresa believes that listening to her patients’ problems and concerns will tell her more than any physical exam ever will. So much so that her personal healthcare motto is, “We [Healthcare Professionals] need to empower patients to take ownership of their own health, they are their best advocates. I love what I do because I can listen to people’s stories, validate their concerns, educate them on their health/illnesses, and encourage them to be an advocate for the own health-and share a lot of laughter, smiles, and stories in the meantime.”
At home, Theresa is a busy mother taking care of a little 3 year old boy and a 1 year old baby girl with her husband who has his own practice as a Chiropractic Physician in the community. At home Theresa practices a healthy life style through clean organic vegetarian eating and a chemical free home. Her family enjoys yoga, running, biking, and swimming together on her off days.
